Art or Painting for Book Cover

竞赛简介

The siblings are helping my dad put together a self-published book of 100 of dad's poems. We need a full color book cover design in a 6" by 9" vertical format that is appropriate for digital short run printing at the print shop. The design needs to include a wrap to the spine (which is of unknown width as yet), and spine typography with details to come. The design needs to include some "bleed" at the other three edges and crop marks.

There will be a typographic title overlaid on the art on the cover. Currently, dad wants the title to be "100 Amazing Poems by Silvio Skefich" but I actually hope to convince him change that name. But the design needs to be such where type can overlay on the painting without visual confusion.

My dad wants the cover design to spin off of his poem called The Two Ants. You are the designer, but my vision would to be to have a cobble in the lower area foreground (cobble at water's edge of a stream as per the attached poem), with the two enlarged ants on the cobble. One ant is examining a very small stick that is placed as a bridge for him to cross, whereas the other ant has her head down and is marching the perimeter. The upper area would be a water color wash effect (or pastels), with a blurred photographic realism effect of the blurred background aspects of the river scene, which the type will overlay. It could be realistic or more interpretative. A cartoon version will not work. I am actually looking for a true artist/painter to take up this project. Maybe water color pencils could work. These are just my ideas of inspiration.

I am looking for a preliminary sketch to start with and perhaps an example you may have already done of a similar treatment of painting.

    As I talk to my dad about the entries, he is realizing that he wants the cover of the book to say
    100 Amazing Poems
    by Silvio Skefich
    Featuring The Two Ants
    He is precise in that he wants the last line capitalized just so with no quote marks.
    If you leave your cover design the same/unchanged, it will NOT affect the design we choose as the winner. I assume that this change can be made later.
