Who am I?
Hi there! My name is Josh, and I'm the Founder of Mathematical Mischief - a blog/website.
The site has been something that has been really special to me for a number of years - it's something that I use to explore my interest in mathematics. In the past, that's included:
- Providing free online quizzes and resources.
- Exploring how maths is used in the real world.
- Analysing various real-world scenarios with maths.
At the moment, I'm rebuilding Mathematical Mischief, with a view to relaunch it sometime in the next twelve months. As a part of this, I'm looking for a logo - something that I can use across Mathematical Mischief's online presence. This includes the site, Facebook and Twitter.
What do I want?
As a part of this contest, I'd like two things - a full logo, and a smaller icon/picture that can be identified as a part of the site. These would be in a format that can be used on the site, as well as Facebook and Twitter, as well as a copy of the Photoshop/graphics program file (just in case in future, I need to make any changes/modifications/seasonal alternates).
What am I looking for?
Specifically, I'm looking for a site that identifies Mathematical Mischief as the following:
- The site has maths content. There's some mathematical symbols and calculations. Nothing super technical in the logo, then - something that could be identifiable by the average eighteen year old. Think high school/real world mathematics - calculating the cost of a plumber, Pythagoras' theorem, that sort of thing.
- That there is a person behind the site that's learning, just like them. That could be included in the logo, in the banner, both - or it could even just be hinted at. I'm a rather tall person that wears a pair of half-rim glasses, which is a distinctive look.
- That the site isn't just serious - it's fun, too. The logo should be colourful, it should be interesting, or even intriguing. In saying that, it should also be realistic - nothing too crazy. Ideally, no more than half a dozen main colours in the logo.
- A logo that's had a bit of heart put into it. That doesn't feel like a corporate identity, nor just a total casual identity - something that represents a combination of both - oh, and maths, most of all.
What have you included to help me?
I recognise that as the site has no visible online presence at the moment, it might be a little tricky. So here's a few things to get the creative juices flowing:
- Archive Site: http://archive.mathematicalmischief.com - this is an archive of the old site, including old content and resources.
- Attached Files:
I've included copies of old site logos and banners. These include:
- the original site logo [green] (note: the image of the child in said banner is not me, it's a stock photo)
- interim logo [black on white]
- the current site logo [blocks]
I've also included a two recent photos - a body length shot from 2015, as well as a face shot, to give an idea of what my glasses look like.
Closing remarks:
In general, I'm leaving the design parameters open - I'd like to see what you come up with. Ask me questions, come up with your own vision of what Mathematical Mischief is all about - it's up to you!
I'll be running this competition until early October - I will be picking a winner from this, and they will be the next logo for Mathematical Mischief (my heart's set on that - I'm placing my hope in you, Freelancer!). I do apologise that the prize is not as grand as I'd like - this is pushing my budget to the limit for the logo.

“I started a competition earlier this week - rebuilding my maths site, I thought I'd get a Freelancer to design and create a new logo and identity for the site. Setting up the competition to run over four weeks, I thought I might have to wait a month to select a design. Within five days of the contest opening, Claudia created a wonderful logo, and was happy to make changes and modifications to suit my needs. I'd say she went above and beyond - even going as far as creating a sample of what her design would look like on social media platforms, as well as providing the base elements she used to make the logo. Overall, I'm ecstatic - she's created a design that I love. She'll definitely be my first choice for design work in the future. :) ”
