My band needs a logo, help me out!

Hi there freelancers!

I'm looking for someone to help design the logo for my band, Periapsis.

The winner of this contest will have the opportunity to do some further design work for me creating colour versions, T-shirt designs and perhaps even a website among others.

What I'm looking for:
• Something simple but recognisable
• Something mono (for now). Black and white is perfect, though the winner may be asked to elaborate into colour versions later
EDIT: I say mono but there are some great ideas utilising 2 colours which is cool. But what we're looking for is a super simple cut out for now, no shading.
• Ideally something which combines the name of the band with a separate logo (like the Periphery example below).
• Something which reflects our genre: we're making prog rock/metal, so we're looking for something to match, something clean and modern.
• Something which perhaps relates to the definition of our name:
○ Periapsis: (Noun) the point in the path of an orbiting body at which it is nearest to the body that it orbits.

Important Notes:
• The winner will need to provide source drawings in a Photoshop compatible format (ideally PSD).
• The winner will also need to provide any font files used in the logo design.
○ I need full use of the logo once complete so no proprietary fonts!

Examples of logos I like:

○ I really like that they have created a unique 'P' which is so easily recognisable

○ Love how this logo has plenty of space but forms one continuous image. This image can be both the logo and the name all in one.
• Kanivool: http://metalassault.com/Interviews/Pictures/karnivool_logo.jpg
○ Nothing too crazy here but it's effective none the less.
• Radiohead: http://www.logosurfer.com/sites/default/files/radiohead-logo_0.png
○ Another one with text and a square-sized logo which is easily recognisable.
• Gojira: http://www.elsantuariodelrock.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/gojira-logo-700x325.jpg
○ This one is a little 'scratchy' for our application but I like it none the less

○ Love this one, only would like something a bit more legible

○ Simple but effective

○ Again, a bit messy for us but I like it.

○ Simple but effective, name and logo all in one.

○ Love this one as well. Love the random backwards letters

This is my first time using freelancer or anything like it so I hope I'm doing it right! I'm open to any questions or comments.

    Hi everyone,

    We have picked our winner, or actually winners, 3 in total. Congrats to nestoraraujo for #179 , DrewKalinski for #111 & ArthurDemurger for #217 .

    I do want to say thank you to every single one of you who participated. The response we received was amazing and the quality of work was very impressive. Many of you created some really impressive designs, but were rejected because it wasn't quite what we were looking for.

    We do feel guilty that so many of you worked so hard and won't get paid for it. We really enjoyed our first Freelancer experience, but wonder if this method is exploitative of you, the freelancers. We hope that all of you whom don't walk away with the award for this job, are able to make a reasonable income using Freelancer on the whole.

    Hi everyone, 24 hours left to go just wanted to clarify where we're at...

    For starters, thank you everyone. We were really blown away by the mammoth response we got from this & we genuinely feel guilty so many of you will miss out.

    I want to be very clear on what's winning so that everyone still has a chance. We will take up a second design if we love more than one.

    The current competition winners in preference order are...
    #179 - Our favourite thus far. Simple, unique, embracing the theme, awesome use of space, great font (if not a little too much like Karnivool's font) and generally awesome logo
    #111 - Our favourite font so far, tasteful backwards P, another awesome use of space. Logo is cool, but not quite ticking the boxes as nicely as #179
    #145 - This one is so simple but we love that about it, it's still hanging in for the running

    Most of the other designs have now been rejected but a few others still remain because we like them as well.
