I work in the art industry and need some assistance writing a sample of a thought paper I will be proposing as an admission requirement for summer job applicants. I have never personally written a thought paper so could really use some assistance from anyone with experience. I’m hoping to propose a thesis which will include a topic proposed by a well known theorist and an image which the applicant will be required to compare and contrast the theory too. For this sample the thesis I am proposing is: Laura Mulvey's "The Male Gaze" There have been numerous theoretical constructions that have been applied as a critical assessment for the creation of the films that have been made in pop culture. These theoretical frameworks have usually provided a better understanding of the relationship between film other arts, audiences, society and reality. The following paper will discuss the film theory of “The Male Gaze” that was first coined by Laura Mulvey a feminist film critic. The theory identifies the films and majority of the visual arts as a representation of the world from a male perspective. Through this representation, the woman is identified as an integral factor in demonstrating phallocentrism (Mulvey,57). The woman is constantly made to appear as an inferior character as opposed to the man argues the theorist. Her lack of a penis is emphasized and is made to be a central theme that the audience can remember even after the end of the film. Picture Attached Below!!! The above picture is taken from the music video by Jason Derulo featuring Snoop Dogg known as “Wiggle”. The caption is a clear indication of the theory of the male gaze as was stated by Laura Mulvey. The women in the picture are seen to be significantly lower in status as opposed to the men who are present. The women are also seen to largely outnumber the men that are present, they are shallow minded and incapable of taking care of themselves in any way other than using their sexuality to gain the material possessions that they have. The theoretical criticism is seen to fail to live up to its potential as since its construction members of the community continue creating many more films in the same way. Women have also allowed themselves to be used as symbols for use in portraying sexuality. Based on the thesis provided I would like you to write a 2500 word thought paper on Laura Mulvey’s “The Male Gaze.” Using the image provided from Jason Derulo’s music video “wiggle” I would like you to carefully and thoroughly link specific details of the image to your interpretation of Mulvey’s theory. Since this is a discussion paper you should offer suggestions and raise questions you might have. It is also important to consider the weaknesses of her position in addition to its strengths. In other words, give some thought to other kinds of gazes and different ways of understanding the image. Make sure to remember that unlike a classic essay a thought paper makes observations and entertains possibilities (raising queries and opening it up). In all I’m looking for a complex and nuance exploration of the topic rather than a reductive, cut and dried explanation. While this is a thought paper I would also like you to include some research to demonstrate your understanding of the concept. Also feel free to use “I” where it seems natural to do so.
