There are lists and lists of books that have been challenged for one reason or another. As an elementary teacher, you will most likely have to address a book challenge at some point in your career. Your job in this assignment is to pretend that you have been asked by administrators at your school to develop a Challenged Materials policy for the school to follow when community members raise challenges about certain books in your school's curriculum. You will complete this assignment in essay form. 1) Introduction: •Explain the difference between challenged and banned materials. •Identify the purpose of this assignment (1-2 paragraphs) 2) Literature Review •Find 4-5 articles that focus on challenged and banned materials in schools and/or libraries. Summarize the main points of each article in this section. You should introduce each article and then explain the author's main points in your own words. If you do use the author's words, you will need to quote the author directly. Quoted material should remain at a minimum. One of your articles may be the "Management Matters" article the Week 16 and 17 folder. There are several articles available in EBSCOhost Web through the Merced College library. (3-4 paragraphs) 3) Present your policy •You need to develop the policy and explain your rationale for designing the policy the way you have. Refer to the literature to support your decisions. (4-6 paragraphs) 4) Conclusion •Summarize your main points, emphasizing why it is important to have such a policy in place. (1 paragraph) The suggested paragraphs for each section are only suggestions. Your final product should be 4-5 pages in length, including your Works Cited or Reference page. The cover page and abstract page do not count in this total. Follow either MLA or APA formatting for this assignment. MLA formatting does not use a cover page or abstract.
