I actually did not know the answer to precisely why ice floats so I had to look up. What I learned is that unlike many other liquids that can become solid, ice is less dense than water. In most cases the solid form of a liquid is more dense. Since ice, unlike rocks or other more dense objects, is lighter than water, the ice will float.
