I've used cygwin for about 10 years to develop on Windows. I'd have no problem with this. As for me, I have 14 years experience programming (7 Java, 7 C/C++), and a BS from Carnegie Mellon University.

I regularly do similar tasks. For example, I've compiled Bino3D for Windows.

I am an expert in this particular. Compiling some source under Cygwin can be challenging, and requires many dependency checks, as well as a lot of time knowing the C source code and modify it accordingly based on compiler error.
