Add unique identifer to file

Im looking for a way to basically add a unique code to files that can be read from the file to identify it.
Heres how it should work:
I have a file, I upload it to my site and a unique code is added to it along with other details. If i want to check for details on the file i can later upload it to the site and check for details on the file.
