Victorian Wallpaper Art - Brownson House Living Room -
Shelton Historical Society, Shelton, CT
We need an Illustrator to recreate the art for a wallpaper that was removed long ago and is to be replaced in a Federal style farmhouse, [url removed, login to view], in Fairfield County, Connecticut. We have a faint photo, and schematic sketch with the proportions already laid out for you. We just need someone who is a good illustrator with a painterly hand who is also adept at illustrator to create the digital file. End product will be a custom wallpaper design that is digitally printed. You would be recreating a bit of history and we would be greatly appreciative.
In short, we need someone who has experience and a knack for drawing roses, flowers, decorative medallions, swags and bows in an old-timey, Victorian style. This is not modern in the least. Basically 3 motifs (oval medallion with inset roses and ribbon bow, a bouquet, and a fabric swag) that t will be repeated throughout the design in a half drop repeat. Colors are from the family's memory - pale pink, light blue, deep rose, leaf green, blush ivory. But you will need to select them so that they blend into a believable, soft, middle-class household design that would be found in a late 19th century American home. I can be your sounding board with the colors and motifs as I am the interior designer on the project.
Your design will be using 5-6 colors to emulate a hand-blocked or roller printed wallpaper design where each color was laid down separately on the paper. The 2D design and colors will attempt to create a 3D rendition of the motifs. We are including photos of old wallpaper designs where this method is shown well. We can send higher res images of these later so you can really zoom in and see the detail.
The Brownson House is an old farmhouse once owned by the Brownson Family, successful, yet frugal, middle-class, farmers who grew produce for the local market. Thought the home was originally built in 1824 by a wealthy merchant, the museum is outfitted to denote the middle class farm life of the Brownson in 1913, the moment before electricity, the telephone and technology came to the area. The home is now an interpretive museum that hosts school children and residents. .
