Hello, I just view you sketches, and see few problems with this design. One of the problems in winter will be frozen roller after frozen rain. I think you have to heat the roller in winter.... Hello, I am a mechanical engineer with 19 years experience in Canada. I like your idea with the cleaning mechanism and it is a very good candidate to work. Just few points to clarify: 1. overall size of the pannel. 2. A frame has to be build to attach the bearings, roller chains.(aluminium frame or steel?) 3. The cleaning brush has to translate and rotate in the same time. For translation of the rotary brush the idea with the chain and sprockes is very good. An economical alternative is with steel wire rope and pulleys. Two ends of the wire ropes will be attached to the housing bearings of the rotary brush to translate it left or right. A second DC motor will be added to the axle of the rotary brus. For frame you can use aluminum profile, 40mm x 40mm and plastic sliders (standard parts) When dust has to be removed a cleaning agent has to be sprayed on the glass, so a soap dispensers may need to consider. Instead of rotary brush I suggest to have just a rubber blade like the one cleaning the windshield. to translate left and right. Best regards, Ioan

Hey I've had a quick look at your idea. It looks like a good, simple but effective way to maintain your solar panels. I just need a little bit more information in terms of solar panel size, whether you want to link the drive shaft to more than one panel, how you intend on setting up the sensors and the controlling the frequency of the wipers (micro controller or maybe PLC?). Shouldn't be much trouble to put into a technical drawing. Its more the operation I'm curious about. I'm trying to think of a way to do it without having two chains as I think that could cause some issues after a while. Things like chain stretching and needing adjustments or the gear slightly cocking and jumping a link. Also a timer as the roller goes from A to B with a interlock cutting the motor if the roller hasn't reached home after the set period of time, just in case unforeseen was to happen.
