The assignment is a literature based report so you will research and write about what has already been published about the topic that you are interested in. So the emphasis is on what is already known about a topic, and how and why it is known. You may wish to focus on the gaps and the lack of knowledge about a topic.

You may be interested in a topic because it is relevant to your country, region, professional job, but there is little or no research undertaken. Much of what is researched often comes from western style democratic systems e.g. UK, USA, and Australia. This means that you will need to establish that this is an issue for you, your school, your region, your country, and then make it clear that you are studying research from other countries because of the lack of research in your own setting. Please make it clear in the introduction to your assignment, and when you have completed the analysis of the issue you need to have at least a paragraph on what the research findings mean for your own country or school: is it transferable? What are the implications? What types of research need to be done in your own setting or country?

You will need to look at Journal articles, Research Reports and Books in the area that you are working on. At the end of this booklet are lists of readings that should help you to get started.

There are a number of ways in which an assignment can be written but here is a useful framework:

Title: you need to have a clear title

Abstract: you need to write about 150 words (not counted in the 3,000 words) which explains what your assignment is about and what the key findings are.

Assignment: you need to present your assignment in 3,000 words by using sections. You can use section headings. A suggested format is as follows:

Introduction: explain the focus; your aim (what you intend to achieve); your research questions; why this is a valid area of investigation (you, your country, policy etc). If you are looking at research evidence outside of your country then you need to say why.

Sections: Then have a number of sections that you create based on the main themes you have identified from the literature about of the area of focus. For example, if you want to investigate the evidence base for boys underachievement in England, then I would expect to see a section on what is meant by boys underachievement and all the debates about this; then I would expect to see a section on the evidence base for boys underachievement; then I would expect to see a section where you debate the issues and evidence, and what this means for you, schools in your country, and you should put this into perspective and ask is this an issue in England only or is this a global issue? Then I would expect to see a recommendations section: what needs to be done to resolve the situation, and what are the implications (e.g. funds, training), also what types of research need to be done to find out more.

Conclusion: explain what you set out to do, what you have found out and what it means for you, the profession, schools, and your country.

References: you need to list out all the references you have used in the assignment. Make sure you follow the correct way of doing this, see your Handbook for guidance. References are not counted in the 3,000 words.

General guidance: Please use the spell and grammar check software to make sure that your work is as accurate as possible.
