Abstract
Electric Vehicle has been the area of research in recent years and finds their uses in many day to day activities like transportation. The Design and analysis of electric vehicles not only requires the knowledge of electrical engineering but other engineering majors such as structural engineering, mechanical engineering as well. In this project, we will develop an electric vehicle as per our requirement given in the description section.
Brief Description:
Electric skateboard is an electric vehicle which operates on battery and finds uses in personal transportation. In this project, an electric skateboard will be designed which can carry a weight up to 80kg [1]. There are many variants of electric motor based vehicle available such as those presented in [2]-[4]. The battery system will be made rechargeable to have better operational time without much addition cost. The differential speed control will make the vehicle more stable and easy to operate. The cost and the stability of the system will be our main judging criterion. We are targeting to achieve these specifications:
1. Maximum load = 70-80 kg.
2. Maximum speed = 2-3 m/s
3. Maximum Acceleration = 0.5- 1m/s^2
4. Main wheel diameter = 25 cm(approx.)
Overall Project aim
The main aim of the project is to design and demonstrate a battery operated electric vehicle that can carry a load of approx. 80 kg. The major objective of the project will be the low cost, less hazardous emission and better control.
Project Objectives
The major objectives of the projects are listed below:
1. To design and demonstrate a low cost and safe source of transportation for short distance up to few hundreds of meters.
2. Simulate the analog and digital circuits required for the design.
3. Design the prototype of the vehicle and demonstrate as per specifications given above.
4. The 3D model and prototype will be simulated on the CAD tool.
5. Final Developed product will be demonstrated and tested on the real scenario (in our campus premises)
Apart from this, Battery life monitoring will be done to showcase the low power consumptions as compared to other available electric motor vehicle [2].
Literature Review
We started with the literature review from many journals and conference papers and text books related to light vehicle design and Battery operated vehicle design. There are ample of information present which describes the design and performance aspect of electric vehicles. We analyzed following Reference papers and summary of all the papers that we finally selected as a guide for our project development is given below.
1. Design Calculation [6] : We took this paper as our reference for the design of different component. The calculation has been already done as per our requirement.
2. Electric Vehicle Characterization [7]: Characterization of the design is one of the critical steps of any design project. It is highly important to check where we stand when compared with the requirements that we set initially. Also it is highly important to compare our performance of the vehicle with some of the industry standard electric vehicles.
3. Component Selection [7] : The Same paper has been used as our major guide for the selection of components. Considering the design objectives, we chose our component after the investigation and the availability of the components.
4. Battery Selection: The electrical load has been calculated for different mechanical loading condition and battery selection has been done.
5. Modeling and Simulation [8] : Modelling and simulation of the design will revolve arounrd the reference [8]. It highlights some of major issue related to the design also the paper is very useful in simulation the performance of the designed vehicle. The mathematical modelling presented in the paper will be used as reference guide for the entire design.
Work Package Breakdown
The several tasks required for the completion of the project are divided in following subsections:
1. Electronic System Design
1. Find suitable motors as per speed and power budget.
2. Select all the additional components of the systems such as wheels, trucks etc.
3. Rechargeable battery selection as per current and voltage requirements.
2. Drive Mechanism and System Integration and Testing
1. The drive mechanism will be designed and tested.
2. Final Integration of the system will be done and tested.
Final Report of the project will be submitted.
Conclusion
Till First week of December, we were expected to complete our Literature review and the hardware design related calculation. We have already calculated all the design parameters for the vehicle and software simulation will be started this week. We are moving forward as per our project Time line and trying to meet the deadlines. The next task for us is to check the performance of the vehicle by simulating different component.
