campus network performance testing

Im looking to learn from an experienced sys admin on how to best test, quantify and monitor a campus network performance. How best to understand wireshark logs in regards to network impact and help learn about appropriate ways to maintain healthy network infrastructure. This is purley an educative task rather then "working" job but id like to build a mentoring relationship with a more experienced sys admin/network engineer. Thanks
