MLCD –N / Development plan

In short:

The idea behind the MLCD (Multi Layered Communication Device) is that through Flash templates a customer can easily modify such a template in order to advertise with a professional appearing commercial.

This concept can be applied on all sorts of media, such as LCD billboards, beamers and LED displays. Even in corporation with listening devices (audio) to recognize certain words or phrases in order to target the advertisement more precisely.

MLCD – N

The MLCD – N module targets the Narrowcasting module and is the base of the whole system. The system is split up into two segments:

online RIA (rich internet application) which holds the templates and offers the possibility to compile and publish to selected players

local player app: this application running on a Windows XP Embedded platform connects through the internet (DSL or UMTS) to the online RIA and queries for new advertisements, if found it copies them to the local hard drive

Online RIA

This application which runs on a dedicated server and is (preferably) build in Adobe’s Flex 2 platform. (layout enclosed)

In the RIA a customer is added through the Admin page and selected hardware players and templates are assigned to his account.

By logging in this customer can first select which player (or group of players) he want to edit (provision) By clicking ‘select’ the user selects a certain player and goes to the next page. This page contains the compose part of the RIA and enabled the user to select from:

Image

Flash

When image is selected, the user can browse the already uploaded images into his account (repository) or he can upload new images or delete images from the repository. These images are suppose to be high res.

Flash is the heart of the system and the base of the idea. Flash is vector based and can be projected on all sorts of media while remaining the sharpness of the advertisement. Plus it is fairly small in file size.

When selecting the Flash entry the user has the possibility to browse the repository for available templates. User cannot add templates themselves. When selecting an appropriate template it’s automatically previewed in the Preview window at the right of the screen. Users can then add images and text to the template in the therefore determined fields. The template has pre-defined positions for text and images. By adding text and images in this page these are automatically added to the template in order to preview the final result. When the user agrees with the final result in the preview window it gives this newly created ‘slide’ a unique name by clicking ‘save as’

If a slide is ‘saved as’ it is copied into the directory for publishing in the storyboard/timeline. In the storyboard/timeline page the user has to opportunity to select the slides that are available for him to use. These slides consist of images and flash object. By dragging these slides into the storyboard/timetable the user can determine how often a particular slide is being shown. Or make a group and let that group be repeated X number of times.

A storyboard/timeline is applicable for a single or a group of players. (As defined in the first page)

When finished the user clicks ‘provision’ and the RIA makes the newly created slides available for download for a certain (group of) players.

Next time the players contact the RIA the new slides are being downloaded and shown.

The Player

The hardware device that plays the slides is a compact, Celeron Mobile [url removed, login to view] device based graphically on Intel 945GM. This chipset can support 90 degree rotate mode in order to display landscape and portrait advertisements.

On the player itself a C++ application run on startup which can play slides according to the timeline defined by the RIA. This can be images or flash objects.

The player plays the slides in full screen mode and is never allowed to minimize or close the ‘playing’ application. When there are (for some reason) no slides available to play, it defaults to a black logo of Kraftworks.
