Interest in the Internet of Things (IoT) has grown rapidly in recent years. This trend seems set to continue, with increasing numbers of everyday devices becoming “smart”. The Raspberry Pi and Arduino are popular platforms used by enthusiasts for IoT projects because of their low cost, size, accessibility and active community support. There are, however, significant differences between these “families” of small computers. The student undertaking this project should investigate the relative merits of both types of computer and, through the development and testing of a proof of concept networked application, collect the data needed to compare the suitability of the Raspberry Pi and Arduino for IoT projects.
