In this assignment, I want you to get practice going into the library’s scholarly databases to find information on various topics related to the Exodus tradition.
If you must, you may also use Google Scholar ([url removed, login to view]) and Google Books ([url removed, login to view]), but I want the sources to be scholarly, that is, intended for those doing scholarly research.
I would prefer, however, that you find and cite ebooks and articles from the library’s databases so you know how to use these, but we do not teach religious studies at TSU so our offerings may not be that robust. JSTOR, the Religion & Philosophy Collection (EBSCO) and our ebook collections—both ebook Central (ProQuest) and eBook Collection (EBSCOhost) --are good sources. There are many more to explore on the Library's A-Z list of Electronic databases. You can also try the search engines / discovery tools on the Library’s Catalogs and Databases page, but I think you get better results going into the more specialized databases directly. (Discovery tools are inherently buggy because they are 3rd party tools with too many moving parts.)
For all but the last bullet, all you have to do is find the article or book, then cite it according to MLA Style Guidelines.
All of the library’s online databases will generate an MLA formatted citation for you—you just have to click on an icon or button (varies depending on the database) and copy/paste it into your assignment. If you find a source in Google Scholar or Google Books, you can try to craft the citation yourself by following MLA Style guidelines, or you can go to Citation Machine ([url removed, login to view]) and it will create your citation for you after you plug the information into it. If you copy paste out of Citation Machine sometimes a colored background comes with it, but by doing “Paste Special” then “unformatted text” the colored background drops out. So this easy, right?
Find two articles or ebooks referencing the meaning of the prohibition of graven images in the Ten Commandments, or the meaning of the Ark of the Covenant, or of the Golden Calf.
So little space is in the OT is devoted to the creation of the earth, and yet so much is devoted to the Tabernacle! Why? Find two articles or ebooks on the Tabernacle in Exodus, for example, if it can be viewed as a work of art or its significance in the story, if it was added in later, etc.
Find two ebooks on the character of God in Exodus.
Find one article on the theme of “divine presence” in Exodus. Not Divine name, but presence.
Last, cite and then summarize in your own words three articles on any topic that interests you about Genesis, Exodus, or the Old Testament. Blood atonement, Golden Calf, Ham’s Curse, whatever you like. Here I want three separate citations and abstracts. Don't try to weave them together into an essay.
