Details below: This assignment will develop your unit planning skills in English. It requires you to plan one guided reading lesson focusing on one aspect of comprehension for a small group of students (4-6) in a primary school class. The assignment has two parts: (1) the plan proper; and (2) an essay component describing, explaining and justifying the plan. select your text (e.g., a picture book, a chapter book). The text may be a traditional print book, an ebook or a story app After you have selected your text, you should then select one comprehension teaching approach studied in CRB005 to use with the text: • one comprehension strategy (ie., a reader factors lesson – but make sure you only do one of the comprehension strategies); or • one top level structure activity (ie., a text factors lesson – again, focus on only one text factor); or • one vocabulary development activity Plan approximately 20-30 minutes of work for the lesson. You should include examples of handouts and texts the children will use. These can be added in an appendix For the second part of the assignment – the essay – you are required to write in academic prose. This part of the assignment builds on the writing skills addressed in EAB510. In your essay, make sure you cover the following: • Describing – What happens in your lesson? • Explaining – How does it happen? • Justifying – Why have you designed your lesson in this way The essay requires you to do some independent reading. High marks will only be awarded to essays that display evidence of extensive reading, a high level of comprehension of the reading, and skill in applying ideas gleaned from the reading.
