Just needing a simple website to display to friends and family seems a little vague and open-ended. Without knowing more details, all I can really do is tell you some neat design ideas and my experience. My experience: I currently work full-time as a Web Developer for a local company in Cincinnati, Ohio USA. I've been working here and making websites for local businesses and people for the last 6 years or so. I specialize in PHP, WordPress Plugins/Themes, and jQuery. The reason I am here is because I am getting bored with my day job and thought some freelance work might break the routine of the big company project I'm currently working on and bring in some extra money to boot. Some neat design ideas: Modern one page design with scroll blocks, alternating between one as a color with text, the next a background image that has that behind the page effect. A bootstrap design with all their icon packs and 12-grid development style and using some jQuery to have subtle animations that focus in on scroll. A one page artsy design with no scrolling and instead overlays on the one page to change the content; would allow for more freedom in creating a stylish look. I don't know, I would love to talk with you about ideas and see if we can come up with something. Or if you had more details on what you were wanting to do, that would help as well.
