Living Room and Dining Room in 100 year old southern home

We recently moved into a 100 year old home that I believe is a colonial revival. We want to update the home but still have the style fit the bones of a beautiful old home. We are looking to have our living room and dining room designed to start us off on a path so we have more direction to continue working on the rest of the house. We recently painted the living room tinsmith and like the color. There is a vintage sewing machine that can be used as furniture and we have currently a blue gray couch, chair and ottoman that match and a vintage leather couch in the living room. The dining room has a light gray console in it that can be used or moved elsewhere.
Our previous home was decorated in a modern farmhouse decor. I like that style, but realize that may not be in style anymore or fit our new home. We love the bright natural light the large windows give and want to keep that light bright feel. We currently have faux wood window blinds up for privacy but are not opposed to moving them if a better idea is presented. The blinds also don't work with floor to ceiling curtains. The summers in North Carolina are hot and we do feel that window coverings will help keep the house cooler, especially the dining room since it is on the south west side of the house. We were also thinking of adding wainscotting to the dining room as an interesting architectural feature to dress that room up.
We like a lot of different styles but aren't sure which ones work with our home or how to blend any of the styles together. We like modern farmhouse, french country, industrial, vintage, and traditional styles. We want the home to look nice, but also casual and inviting. We have 3 little boys that are hard on everything and my husband prefers that the furniture doesn't overwhelm the space and look cluttered.
I can send more photos and examples of different things we like once we are to that point.
We just moved to the south and want to embrace the beautiful southern charm that our house has. We also have copies of the original architectural drawings.
