Extending and Maintaining an existing Java Web Video Portal integrated with Mobile Service Provider APIs

The developer is required to work on an existing Java web application. An overview of the application is as follows: Who are the users? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mobile users. Note: this is not just for the smartphone owners but also for the low end handset owners. What is the application? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - An online videos portal, where the user can browse and download videos. Do the users have to pay? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Yes, they have to. - NOTE: This is the most important aspect of the application Details in Attachment. What is the application architecture like? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The servers are all on cloud(2 clouds). There are 3 webservers(Tomcat) and 2 DB servers(MySQL). - The data server resides on AWS and basically holds the contents (videos) - Due to indian constrictive laws, the personal information of a user like his mobile number has to be retained within India and hence the application server along with user info are on a cloud in India. - There is yet another admin server(running the reports, logs, mailing the notifications etc) that resides on the Indian cloud server as well. - There are 2 MySQL servers, the main DB server being used by the application server while the other that is used for generating the reports simply mirrors the main DB. The mirror is synced with the main DB by running a cron everyday. How does the content upload take place? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - this is managed by our content entry team and is basically done as follows: - - there is an internal server within the company who's IP is whitelisted. - - The target video is chopped(for e.g. songs) and converted into various different formats that different handsets support and are then uploaded to a location within this internal server. A hook(shell script) then automates the pull from this location to the content server. - - - - The video chopping and conversion is intended to be automated (one of the immediate tasks of the newly selected candidate) and a part of this is already done. But as of now this is manually done. Is the application a CMS? - yes ofcourse it is. There are many category of videos and they are all managed from the backend.
