I operate Unicenta oPOS to run a cash register in a retail setting on an office PC Running windows XP. Unicenta operates in JRE. My scale is an Avery Berkel 6720 scale which connects to the computer via an RS232 9 pin serial port. I need the scale and PC to communicate. The makers of Unicenta recommend Netbeans to edit the javascript that makes up unicenta, I don't care that Netbeans is used or not. Scale protocols exist that are designed for other scales. On of the other protocols could be edited or a new one written. Possibly it is an option to create a protocol that is user configurable as there is a desire by others to used scales as well. I have the manual for the scale and am able to configure many settings on the scale. The work that I believe needs to be done is that the commands the scale sends to denote status or weight are not understood by the program. I suspect this is a simple job for a person knowledgeable in Java programming. Complete information is available for the scale online or through the user's manual. I have hooked the scale to my PC using 232analyser to monitor the serial port and the scale appears to communicate properly. I would like to add that Unicenta oPOS is open source and completely free.
