The regression of postshortage water use (y) on

x1- Household Income, in thousands of dollars

x2- Preshortage Water Use, in cubic feet

x3- Education of Household Head, in years

x4- Retirement Coded as dummy, 1 if HH head retired

x5- number of people living in HH at time of Water Shortage (summer 1981)

x6- Change in the number of people, summer 1981 minus summer 1980

yields SSR=7405 and SSE=3528 based on 496 observations. Suppose you want to test the hypothesis that socioeconomic status has no linear effect on water use. The regression of y on x2, x4, x5 and x6 yields SSR=7127. Is there sufficient evidence to conclude that the null hypothesis is true? Testing using =0.05. (Hint: Test the portions of a model)

3. A new method of measuring the body fat percentage is investigated. The body fat, age (between 23 and 61 years), and gender (4 males and 14 females) of 18 normal adults are listed in file: BodyFat.

Graph body fat against age and gender (you may want to overlay these two on the same graph). Consider a regression model with age and gender as the explanatory variables. Interpret the results, and discuss the effects of age and gender. Is it useful to include an interaction term for age and gender? [Use Minitab]
