Magento images update

have recently upgraded my development Magento DB to latest version and have some images that are now not assigned, even though the images are all loaded into the DB.
i need a script within PHP direct into the DB to assign only the unassigned products to their images based on the sort order of 0.
so to confirm, around 50% of the products are set up find, so will need to run a select command on products that are not assigned a base image and then assign thunmbail, small image and base image based upon the image with sort order 0.
