I need a script to automatically update an application/folder on a Raspberry Pi. The script should be runnable as a cron job at night and check a server for the current software version by calling an URL like http://server/update/version The server will report the current version, a download URL for the update and a local folder where the update should be extracted. { "version": "5", "url": "http://server/update/[login to view URL]" "localFolder": "/home/application" } If the version number is larger than the one currently installed the script should download the archive from the URL provided into the local folder specified and extract it there. Then, the new software version number should be stored locally in a text file. Finally, the Raspberry Pi should be restarted. The downloaded file should be checked for integrity before extracting it.

Will use Python to implement this. 1. Read remote version number 2. Read local file 3. Compare 4. If version number is newer , then download it; if not, just exit 5. Check file using tar tzf to test integrity. 6. If file isn't good, exit 7. Extract file 8. Update local version file 9. Restart Logs will also be writing to a local file.

Have a rich experience with writing helper shell scripts for system administration purposes and also, for Raspberry Pi too. Steps to get the described script: 1) Discuss about communication with server - is URL permanent, is server will answer in JSON or it will be use another format? From which user you will run this script (in which crontab you place it)? 1.2 (optional)) Using given information I will write a simple web-server, which will be act as your real server with application updates. 2) Write script and test it on the nearest Raspberry Pi.

The simplest approach is to write it as a shell script. I will send you such a script to try before buying. It contains comments that give more detailed information about what it does. At the top you will see these lines, which you should edit as appropriate for your system: # Settings VERSION_URL='http://server/update/version' WORKING_DIR='/var/local/run/update' If you would like changes then please get in touch.
