I would like to build an exceprt extension for mediawiki that will be able to display the first paragraph or the first line of a page, as well as to display the main picture in this page. It is similart to the existing Popups extension but it does not include an API query but a direct query before the page is generated. The Pupups extension ([login to view URL]:Popups)uses TextExtracts ([login to view URL]) and PageImages ([login to view URL]) extensions the can be used as dependencies. This utility will be used for 2 main purpuses: 1. to replace the existing category page with a more descriptive page. 2. a markup tag (i.e: <excerpt|PAGENAME/>. The extension must be suitible for mediawiki 1.25+ A new database table can be used for the excerpts. It should be as lightwheight as possible (similar to the WP category/tag page). It should use a few confuguration variables for controling the options: A. $wgExcertpInCategory (true/false) - whether to add exrepts to the category pages. B. &wgExcerptImage - (true/false) - whether to add an image to the exerpt The extension will be hopfuly free as part of the MediaWiki extentions and the names of the involved developers will be noted, according to their agreement.
