Troubleshoot Joomla Performance/Content Issues

We have a mature Joomla website with tens of thousands of articles that we've been consistently upgrading for many years. After our most recent upgrade some content is viewable on the back end, but then not showing on the front end and vice versa. Also we are using NGINX and publishers will get NGINX errors when trying to update content. We'd like figuring out and resolving what's going on to cause the time outs and errors.
