I am a finance major. help! need 1-5 done on separate documents. 1. Idea discussion. For this part, reflect on your major or a minor, one in which you have had actual classes. What were some major controversies or topics of debate from this area? What sort of things interested you most? Is there a set of central debates that constitute the discipline? What do scholars in the field argue about? After this reflection, choose a topic and write three or four sentences BRIEFLY explaining what you want to research and take an argumentative position on. This is not an opinion essay. You should not choose "standard" English topics for which you can find a million papers online. DO choose a topic like the gradualism versus saltation models of evolution in evolutionary biology if you are a biology major. Do choose a paper about debates concerning optimal finance strategies if you are a business major. Do choose a topic about racism in the work of Edgar Allan Poe if you are an English major. Do choose a paper pro or con about progressive education if you are an education major. I want major topics of debate that are relative to major fields where important people have said important things about them. 2. Write an annotated bibliography. In order to do this, you need to find sources on your topic. This is not an opinion essay but rather an argumentative essay requiring reasoning and evidence. What you argue probably should not be your opinion alone but rather should reflect the views of some person or persons who publish essays, attempting to defend their position against a counter-position. So you should find, ideally, a "hero" essay that helps you argue what you want to argue, pitting that against a "villain" essay from someone arguing a contrary position. So, ideally, you should have two main sources and a couple of other sources that at least give more perspectives on the issue. In order to find these sources, go to [login to view URL] . Use keywords to find the papers on your topic. DO NOT just do web searches. The two main sources should be more or less directly on your issue in some way, and the two others may also be, or they may be tangential in some regard. For your annotated bibliography, cite each of the sources MLA style in a 4 numbered list and below each citation, write a brief four or five sentence summary of each essay, along with a sentence describing how you're going to use this work in your research and final essay. 3. Write your research proposal. Since this is a building block approach, you can use material from your idea discussion and your annotated bibliography in your research proposal. This proposal should be 1.5 to 2 pages double spaced with a works cited page containing your sources. It should detail 1. The main problem you are investigating and the importance of this problem. 2. The sort of position you're going to take. 3. A discussion of the main material you're going to be using in making your argument. and 4. Some reflection on what you hope to achieve in writing your paper and making your argument-- What you will contribute to the discussion. The research proposal can have four numbered parts if you want. It is not a paper but rather a basic written thought map of how you think your final paper will proceed. It is a proposal to write a long essay, showing the reader ahead of time (and yourself) what you're going to accomplish when the essay is written. 4. Rough Draft w/ Work Cited: You only need to write your introduction and your methods discussion and the first part of your argument for your rough draft. The rough draft should be approximately four pages long, but if you use images or tables or whatever, take this into account. 5. Final Paper (8 pages long)
