Looking for a small application or just a script that I can run and it will scrape data from Zillow and format it into cvs/excel file. Normally this would be pretty easy, but I need to get around API limits. The main specifications are as follows: 1) It needs to be able to scrape all available properties for sale in a given state in a reasonable amount of time. Preferably less than 24 hours. 2) We need to replicate as much information from this api call as possible: [login to view URL] 3) It should out put data to csv/excel file If you would do this through an API approach please let me know how you plan to develop a solution to get around api limits. If you are looking to do this with scraping it is important to note that the zestimate (specifically the rent zestimate) is an important piece of the puzzle and is not given on the search screen making it necessary to visit every single properties page to get the full information. This often time causes Zillow to realize that there is a bot scraping data and prompting a captcha. Given these constraints, a major factor in awarding this project will be an individual’s ability to can clearly demonstrate that they understand the limitations laid out in the previous paragraph and that they have an alternative approach to solving this problem. When scraping Zillow I used selenium to interact with an real browser. This runs all required JavaScript to make zillow think it is a human. This is slow so I would combine this with API queries. Relevant Skills and Experience Proxy experience

Hi, Can you tell me more about the API limits, and how many calls you are likely to make to the API? Also - is there any possibility of getting hold of multiple API keys? Or would you just have the one set available? There's always a way to get around these kinds of limitations, but you really need to know what limitations are currently in place and how those compare to the total number of calls you're likely to make. But if worst came to worst, and you had to scrape the site - then you could get around their throttles by using proxy servers and changing your user-agent header per call. Obviously it would be much better to use the API though. Could you give me more details on the limitations? Thanks a lot, John PS: I just created an ID and, apparently, you get free access to their API too. So all you would need to do is make multiple API keys and cycle those once one set of keys is throttled. Again you'd need to know roughly how many calls a day you need, and how many you can make.

Hello! I'm going to give you my opinion. You ahve to be more realistic about these specifications, specially the first one. These are states with more than 200,000 properties for sale, that's more than 2 per second/day. With their API, forget it, 1000 request p/day is nothing. IMHO the way to do this is renting a lot of VPS (virtual private server), at least 1 per state, and run a script that scrape at 8-12s per page, so you could get a reasonable amout of 8000 logs per day, per vps. In less than a month you may have almost the entire database in your hands. Regards

I have already completed a similar application for a client that had Etsy and amazon e commerce accounts. They couldn’t get all the data they needed using the API’s so I built a pure python web scraper that populated the data onto a csv file, then we ended up building a database and a dashboard to manipulate/ display data which may also be of interest to you in the future.
