This article lists the data from 2001 showing what percent of people owned a gun, in each U.S. state:

(One of the files, the "codebook":

says that the gun question has "SAS Variable FIREARM3".)
I assume there's some straightforward way to import the raw data files into a free program, and use the program to summarize the raw data so that it will show me the percentages listed in the WashingtonPost article. However I don't know how to do it.
Please provide me with step-by-step instructions for processing the data so that I get the percentages in the table in the article. (Then once I know that it works, my plan was to do the same thing for other years, since the same agency has published the same survey data for other years.)
