Assignment 2 (50% of the overall assessment for this module)
This document tells you:
What you need to hand in.
What criteria will be used to assess your work.
When the assignment will be handed out and when it will be submitted for marking.
You are reminded that it is your responsibility to read and understand the University regulations regarding assessment. Your attention is directed to the regulations regarding assessment in the Student’s Handbook of Regulations (available from the University website), and in particular to its guidance on academic misconduct and plagiarism.

Aims:
To research the given topic and write a report discussing and assessing the relevant issues.
Outcomes to be assessed:
This research paper addresses knowledge outcomes 1.1 – 1.3 as described in the module specification. It counts for 50% of the module’s assessment.
Background:
There is an explosion of technologies to communicate with mobile and occasionally-connected devices and sensors. Wireless networking (WiFi), cellular telephone (GSM), packet radio, radio frequency identifiers (RFID), smart personal object technology (SPOT), global positioning systems (GPS), and sensor networks are already with us. Many new communication innovations are on the horizon.
These technologies enable new applications. They allow mobile users to query their environment and they allow applications to monitor and track remote objects. People can ask about nearby services–for example a restaurant, and how to get there from here. Police, hospital, and taxi dispatchers can send the closest vehicle to where it is needed. Conversely, monitoring systems can track the flow of goods and monitor environmental parameters. Rail, airfreight, wholesalers, retailers, and other transportation industries can track goods from their source to their final destination on the retail shelf. Environmental systems can monitor air quality, noise, water flow, and other environmental parameters.
The field of Location Based Services (LBS), which emerged several years ago, presents many challenges in terms of research and industrial concerns. This subject has many arising issues such as security, privacy, data availability, and pricing. Location-Based Services are often used via Web browsers and are in this case considered as a particular type of Web Service. With this perspective, the major challenges to consider are the personalization of services, the ubiquity of services to the mobile user, and the chaining of services with the transmission of context, such as time, location, and possibly other dimensions like the user profile. The user profile typically includes basic user-related data, such as name and address, but possibly also preferences that have been set by the user or inferred by the system.
Hand-in:
For your report you are to submit a word processed document which addresses the following issues:
The background and history to LBS.
The technology required for the distribution and control of location based systems including the LBS communication model, taking into consideration issues such as performance, time delay and responsiveness.
Different technologies and how they support a LBS infrastructure.
The distinction between location tracking and location awareness.
The pros and cons of this LBS paradigm.
The security issues involved.
The future prospects for LBS.
A number of case studies in LBS to support your argument.
