I was a Professional Writing major in college and have helped MANY people write personal statements, including a couple for medical school. Here is one I wrote for myself when doing grad school applications. It's not as long as yours has to be, but its a good example:
As soon as I was able to read, my obsession with literature emerged. Words captivated me; books taught me what those around me could not put into words. I was taught with the help of Beverly Cleary to laugh, Johanna Spyri to cry, Road Dahl and C.S. Lewis to imagine. Due to my eagerness to progress in my reading ability, English was my best subject in school, approaching each new book with an attentive mind. As years passed, my passion for words did not cease, and upon graduating from high school I was certain that I wanted to be a writer.
College provided me with the chance to truly immerse myself in literature and writing, yet my interests expanded further. My classes in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core exposed me to the fundamentals of philosophy, world cultures, and human nature in general. The more I combined what I was learning, the less books were constricted to conveying stories or facts, yet offered a new realm of thinking. Autobiographies became studies of personal morality, works of post-modernism led to existentialism, books on theology arose questions concerning the nature of God.
I enrolled in Philosophy in Literature, a special topics course focusing on Iris Murdoch, and quickly became enamored with the extent of her talent. Through her novels, Murdoch portrays different aspects of human morality, combining the beauty of an artist with the wisdom of a philosopher. Her Platonic ideas, centered on the importance of love and the 'good', shed a new light on the role of the artist to me. I decided then to pursue a major in philosophy, knowing that my education could no longer be complete and I could not be a successful writer without exploring the depths of human nature.
The more I learn in philosophy, the more I want to continue. Philosophy has given me a strong sense of morality and a desire to expand my knowledge. I still hope to write, but my main priority is to continue my education through graduate school, earn my PhD in Philosophy, and return back the gift of teaching. Double majoring with Professional Writing, I have become skilled in different types of writing and editing. I have also acquired a wide background on literature, which has given me a strong reading comprehension. With my work ethic and dedication, I believe I would be a positive addition to your program, and assure you I would make the most of the opportunity.
