Install Wordpress in a site sub-directory

Install Wordpress in a site-subdirectory so that a Wordpress site can be developed while still maintaining the current live static html site. The host is 1and1.com. They have an easy one click automatic installation option for Wordpress, but this doesn't seem to give you an option for installing it in a directory. Installing with their "Easy and Quick" process removes the current site making Wordpress the live site. The current site needs to stay live, with a working Wordpress installation in a sub-directory. Does Wordpress need to be manually installed?
