Beginnerish PHP Question

I have a mysql table with many differnt items in it. I can't alter the table structure. I want to produce a loop that displays the amounts of certain items of a similar type but counts other items individually.?

You'll note that in the results all the fruits (apples and oranges) for each customer are counted as a single item "fruit". The other food items (burritos, sandwiches, etc.) are counted individually in the results.
