Nursing
One of the noblest professions, nursing comprising of nurses and nursing assistants is the largest working group in the health care sector. A nurse is a trained individual who cares for the sick, physically incapacitated and mentally challenged patients. From general wards to operation theatres the role of nurses is worthy of applause. While we are more familiar with hospital nursing, there are other areas where nurses practice their profession such as schools, private clinics, sanatoriums and houses where patients need constant attention.
Nursing duties are diverse and cover a broad range of functions and responsibilities, depending upon the working environment and the qualification. At the very basic level, nurses are needed to give bedside care to recovering patients, assist physicians during examination and lend a hand to surgeons at the operation table. Apart from this nurses are supposed to maintain a complete record of the patients, administer them with medicines, maintain cleanliness of wards and prepare patients for operation. This basic knowledge of the profession is covered in a beginner’s course in Nursing. There are specialized nurses who visit schools and organize regular health check-ups. They check children’s height, weight, vision, oral health and maintain a record for a follow-up in case of any threat to the general health of the children. Nurses at the senior level are specialized to manage intensive care, psychiatric and paediatric patients. Immense dedication and mutual trust is required at such level of nursing for a speedy recovery of patients. The specialized courses catering to such sensitive care are available in some institutes which cover Paediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing and orthopaedic nursing.
There are professional courses available in the premium institutes and universities nationwide. Interested people can opt for a B.Sc. in Nursing or a course in General Nursing & Midwifery. For both these courses the eligibility is 10+2 with Biology, Physics and Chemistry as the main subjects of study and the duration is of 3 to 4 years. Those who want to attain higher education can attain a degree in M.Sc. – Nursing which is a 2 years course.
All such courses can teach is a very theoretic experience which is far gentler than the real life incidents for a nurse. Nursing is a very mentally and physically challenging field. Nurses not only have to work in night shifts and work over-time, but are also at a constant risk of contracting infectious diseases. This profession demands a lot of compassion, patience, calmness, perseverance and hard work without any sentimental attachment. Those who prefer nursing as a career should have a passion for servicing the human kind selflessly.
