I work with clients using effective communication to deliver the designs they want. Please see my portfolio and especially the reviews. You will see a variety of styles because I adapt to client’s needs. I give it my all for each design I do, and you'll get revisions as needed. As strange as it sounds, I think the key to appealing to a broad group of dancers, might be to have a logo with a minimal action look, perhaps (just maybe) showing a couple close to each other in a mildly active pose. I like the general style of your competitor's logo, with the calligraphic lines, but I would go for something a little smoother and not quite so delicate (just a little heavier line weight). After a little investigation, I discovered that Myriad Pro Light is very similar to one of my system fonts (and yours too maybe), Vergur Light. So something in that style is entirely doable.
