You said that "the site loads content into DIVs using AJAX so no page reloading is required", that's good, but every page should have at least different Title and Description, that will be better for SEO. I have gone through with the doc and understand your requirement as well, following is what my understanding and suggestions for your website redesign. I understand that you do not need a new design but the redesign of the existing design but that will involve some editing in the code as well. To convert the site responsive and fit for all types of media i will suggest you to go for twitter bootstrap because if you opt bootstap then you do not have to change major code but just the core structure of the website and rest will be kept within it.
