I want to collect data from several devices which are contacting the central server every hour over IP (mobile via GPRS). There is not much data and needs to be recorded in a central database. Doing something with the data is a project that will be looked at after this. It is now just collecting, but in phase 2 we also need to send parameters back to the devic to change settings (change time to call in, change server address etc) I am thinking of: - windows based web server - collecting data with a service - adding data to a MYSQL database - audit file (.txt/.csv) with logging of all communication When you are interested in this small project, please tell me: - in what language you propose to make this - how long it will take - what you will do differently than I propose above - how long you think it will take. there is no immediate hurry. I am fine if it takes 3-4 weeks in leadtime. Good documentation/well written code and a good price is more important. (Use this as filler of 'time left in between projects') .

You haven't given any specific details or been to clear, so I will tell you what I understood, and what I propose: I understand you want some sort of web service that will receive data, want the data received stored in a database and you want every such communication to be logged. I propose making this web service in Node.JS or PHP, on a linux based server. (Is there any reason you proposed Windows?) Since you haven't given any details, I don't know what the scope of this project is. However I can tell you that in principle, it is quite easy to do this in Node.JS or PHP. I am interested in your project as it has similarities to a personal project I am working on using raspberry pi's as web servers. Because they are small and cheap they can be posted out to the locations and communicate with a central server to aggregate and post back data. I would expect the data transfers to be encrypted and for there to be automatic reporting emails to warn of any communication failures. The application I am working towards is an activity logging system that will display in almost real time the attendance and "Tag Count" of approximately 150 stations. I have assumed that the data sending devices you are intending to use already have the functionality required for your purposes. To answer the points you raise:- Linux Webserver (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). 10 working hours spread over 7 to 14 days. The only difference would be not using windows.
