Hey, you seem to be good with TSQL. I don't want to get into rewriting stuff just for the sake of it - instead of $250 for some custom baked solution, how about I just fix up your query to make it run 10 times faster for $100. That should be sufficient to get you going. The whole job would be similar to my most recent review (Build SSIS job to control existing XML -> SQL import procedure) - but I'm most interested in just the XML slicing part which I optimised very well for 17MB files. If you really need me to do the whole shebang, I can also. Just let me know. *** edit *** I must be confused - why do you want the backup/restore bit? That threw me off. Do you mean for me to do it here, back it up, and send you the backup. And also to give you my steps/scripts? Too much work - you only need an optimised SQL XML query.

I am an experienced SQL Data Warehouse developer with experience in MS SQL Server. My previous work has included deliveries for multiple FTSE100 and SME. My initial question is whether you want a sole MS SQL T-Sql based solution? If you do then it will be slow as your script has it correct, where it has to do multiple conversions on your text file. If you have a full version of SQL Server I would suggest using an SSIS package to do the upload job and failing that I would suggest using an intermediate engine - perhaps Excel to do the translating of the XML file with VBA to push the data into the SQL tables using ADO. Depending on what you do with the data there is opportunities to key the data to reduce the storage load through the intermediate load process technique which would make queries more efficient. I think there are good opportunities here and you need to decide how to leverage your existing MS infrastructure to do the best job. Open to discuss it. /R.
