hi, actually you can not control conflicts while updating because - wordpress changes version but many times plugins take time to get updated - sometimes new functions/code is added which is not available in older versions - plugin support may have been disabled and many other reasons but yes can work on styling through css and take care that it is not overwritten in case of an update, I can help you with styling
