Why did I become a writer? I came by it naturally. I have always been passionate about the art and craft of writing. From a very early age, I indulged in wordplay and wrote-wrote-wrote anything and everything, short stories, all kinds of narratives, plays, poetry, you name it. I learned to write well by reading the works of the great writers and attending to what they had to say about writing as an art. I am happiest when writing and especially when my skills are challenged and stretched. My elementary school teachers and other adults recognized and encouraged this propensity. It was wonderful as a child to be praised for doing something I so enjoyed. As a kid, I read dictionaries and encyclopedias for fun, looking for the most peculiar and exotic linguistic flora and fauna with which to confound my parents and friends. They accused me of having swallowed a thesaurus. Cut to the chase, the result, after acquiring a great education, was a long exhilarating career as a writer and editor in the US publishing industry.
