The goal of this project is to create a system that uses camera(s) to optically measure (or 3D model) the dimensions of off-cuts of materials (the left over pieces of material after you have cut up an object to build something). The information from the optical data 3D/measurement data would be processed and integrated into a database that catalogs each off-cuts material composition (this would be manually entered). I need a developer to create a program that interfaces with an optical system to create 3D models of objects with measurements (accuracy of 1 cm would be desired). All objects to be measured would fit within a 15”x15”x15” cube. The objects may have irregular footprints, however, they will all have flat bases with perpendicular sides. The software will need to interface with the camera to take the measurements and then populate a database with the objects dimensions and other manually entered information (material type). This database will need to have the ability to be queried to find measured objects that could totally contain an inputted 3 dimensional shape with as little as possible excess. From my research, it looks like an Xbox Kinect camera may be a good solution to this problem. The camera(s) would be mounted in a fixed location and there would be a fixed background color – with the option of having a shape with predetermined dimensions in a fixed location to help with calibration (if needed). If required, a turntable could be incorporated to rotate the objects to create a 3D model, however, I feel due to the relatively simple nature of the objects, all that is needed is a footprint shape and a height measurement to create a 3D model, which I believe could be done with one camera mounted so its perspective could get X,Y, & Z measurements. The easier and quicker it is for the person operating the system the better, meaning that if there is any way to not have to move the camera(s) or the object being measured to generate the required information, this would be optimal. If required, it would be preferable to use one camera to get a footprint outline and another to get the height measurement, if this meant that the object being measured never had to be moved. There are many software programs already available that already specialize in 3D modeling of objects. I feel that this project is just a matter of taking the info from these programs (in an automated system) and then creating a searchable database with the 3D information.
