design a barcode reader with 3.5mm audio jack as output port

I have had direct experience trying to slave power from an Iphone audio jack. I only managed to source about 2mA at about 2.5V using both audio channels. This was using FET's as a bridge rectifier. I also found that the 20KHz frequency was getting back into the mic and producing interference. How much power does your barcode reader require and at what voltage? Experienced in Embedded Design. Need to check the maximum current draw able from the audio port. As long as the output voltage is greater than around 1V low-power Attiny microcontrollerscan be run, but what about peripherals. A buck-boost converter can also be used for increasing the output voltage.
