Herewith a sample of my writing on counselling:
"WHY DO WE NEED COUNSELLING?
When we are born we are conscious only of ourselves, we are the universe. We perceive little else other than our basic needs, and if these needs are met we are content. As our consciousness expands we become aware of a world outside ourselves. We discover that there are people, places, and things around us, and that they fulfil our needs. At this point we also begin to recognize differences and develop preferences. We learn to want and choose things. We are the centre of a growing universe and expect to be provided with the things we need and want. Our source of contentment shifts from basic needs miraculously met to the fulfilment of our desires.
Most children, through experiences over a period a time, come to realize that the outside world cannot provide all their wants and needs. They begin to supplement what is given to them with their own efforts. As their dependency on people, places, and things decreases they begin to look to themselves more and more. They become more self-sufficient and learn that happiness and contentment come from within. Most continue to mature and they recognize and accept their strengths, weaknesses, and limitations. At some point, they usually seek help from their concept of God to provide the things they cannot provide for themselves. For most people, growing up is a natural process.
As addicts or people engaged in negative/harmful behaviour patterns, however, they seem to falter along the way. They never seem to outgrow the self-centredness of the child. They never seem to find the self-sufficiency that others do. They continue to depend on the world around them and refuse to accept that they will not be given everything. They become self-obsessed; their wants and needs become demands. They reach a point where contentment and fulfilment are impossible. People, places, and things cannot possibly fill the emptiness inside them, and they react to them with resentment, anger, and fear.@
MY FAVORITE DRINK: My favorite drink would have to be water. I am fascinated by the way the molecular structure changes, depending on the words and sounds around it. In the 1950's some shipwrecked monks were sitting in a life boat, waiting to be rescued. After days of nothing to eat or drink, they prayed over the salty sea water and requested that it become drinkable. The research goes on to show that the water they drank was not salty and they survived to tell the tale. Besides all the health benefits that we gain from drinking water, is this not a wonderful story to add as a climax?
