to develop a Java or .NET application for local voice chat among smart phones or handhelds via WiFi
Description: While all mobile phones support 2 way voice communication via wireless
telecommunications protocols like GSM, GPRS or 3G, they depend on the local
presence of a cellular base station. These stations are not ubiquitous and
their use is not free. However, direct and indirect communications via ad
hoc wireless networking using WiFi or Bluetooth can be used to support 2 way
local voice communication anywhere and without any payment to anyone. Popular
smart phones like the iPhone or Google Android phones typically support
both WiFi and Bluetooth as do portable handheld computers like the iPod,
Palm Tungsten etc.. These devices typically support programming development
environments in languages like Java and C# that allow use of their inbuilt
speakers and microphones and their wireless networking interfaces. These
devices could be used to develop a walkie talkie style audio chat application
communicating locally using ad hoc wireless networking.
