Hello, I have a questions, are the images static, meaning they are fixed? the only thing that the kids can do with the images is to color it? if thats the case, the way I do it is to map the images on the original texture of the character. Mapping of the image to the character is the most important because it will determined which pixel of the image should go to the character's texture. And since the image will be scanned, the images needs to have some kind of marker like, a border to establish the size of the image for getting the correct pixel that will go to the character textures. Perhaps if you can provide a sample of the image that will be used, then I can see if the solution that I have have in mind is possible.

Hello I can do this project for you. I rate we take an AR approach for this. What I would do is using Vuforia I would make all the possible 2D drawings targets. Then once it is colored in, the person will point the app(camera) at the image. We will use the information from that image to load the 3D character right where the person is pointing the camera, say super man standing on the paper with the colors that were used. You can then use animations as well as scripting to have interaction with it. I think this is the best approach. Happy freelance hunting and best of luck with the project. -Calvin

Looks very feasible though some post-work is usually done to make it look really neat. I intend to use some image recognition algorithms in Unity3D C# scripting to define the areas of interest on the scanned image. Then I plan to retrieve the color info from the areas defined on the previous step. After that we can do some averaging and optimisation of the color data. The character model may need some UV-map adapted to facilitate quick changes from inside the code based on new color data. Then we can apply almost any new texture set based on new calculated data. In order to tell more I'd really love to see some samples of the characters and respective scanned images.
