Hi, I have 8 years of experience in designing and developing embedded systems with microcontrollers from Atmel, Microchip, ST and Espressif. I have developed a similar device for my employer for remote irrigation purpose as well as a vehicle track/announce system for public transport for my client. All of the systems does utilized SIM800 module from SIMCOM due to cost and availability. New models utilize 4G module (Ca-01) for future proof. I have also developed an android app for the irrigation/motor controller for ease of use. Those systems can also work with voice call and SMS. I have a few suggestions about your design. 1: The SIM800L is NOT a 5v device, instead it needs 4v for proper operation. It won't work below 3.6v or above 4.2 volt. However the serial communication is 3.3v. So make sure to use a lithium battery (NMC) but not a LFP cell 2: Arduino boards are 5v with 16MHz crystal cannot work at 3.3v. 8Mhz crystals with Atmega328 will work. 3: SIM800L will need upto 2A in short pulses during call/ sending sms. So make sure to use a capable battery. 4: Making use of the Ring Indicator (RI) in the GSM module can improve response time. 5: SIM800 module can store short audio messages in it which can be played back in call. Along with utilizing DTMF, it is possible to make a simple IVRS system. The irrigation system that I developed utilize that function for people who do not have access to smartphone.
