Hi Geeks, I had issues with my old account with setting up [login to view URL] again! I am looking for a CFD professional who can optimize a wind-catcher design for my home construction Current design has rectangular wind-catcher with 9 meter height from ground with x blade dividing the inside into 4 rectangular chambers. Purpose of CFD analysis is optimize wind-catcher geometry for building ground floor of 80 square meter. Design provided:Sketch up 3D MODEL Geometry: One duct on south side , facing the south side of building, open inside the building at the roof level, and not at the bottom .All other three ducts open at bottom. Condition 1 Stack effect ( no wind outside the whole wind-catcher act as a chimney, partition not considered in this case ,effective area 1.6x1.4 sq meter ) rate of ventilation for the area including living, dining (Study not included) . Consider maximum temperature difference of 8 degree Celsius between inside and outside the building and zero wind. What is the difference an opening with 1 m height x 1.6m vs. 2 meter x 1.6m makes? Assume all current opening on only south side of the facade are open for this condition. Condition 2 For the same wind-catcher design as above, boundary conditions changed to wind outside at 2-8 m/s from west side and northwest side and through X shaped partition, what is the air exchange rate wind-catcher provide to living , dining and study area , through one duct of near 0.56 sq meter ( 2.24sq meter rectangle area divided into 4 triangle, one working at a given time-west or NW ). Wind speeds change of 2 m/s increments is enough. Condition 3 Identify potential openings on north and south sides of the building envelope area, through which wind catcher supplies the optimum flow, avoiding stagnant pockets. Area around wind catcher (stair) is considered a continuation of living space. Please note only living, study and dining area on ground floor is included in these calculation. Provide flow paths and velocities through each room in optimized condition as results for above conditions. At the end of your evaluation, will need to provide all output, simulation files for verification using a standard cfd software, and also JPEG or similar image results with explanations of result for me to understand. Turbulence modeling using 3D steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) has been the most common approach for CFD simulations of wind catchers,in literature but please write me with suggestions on how you are planning it.

Hi there, I am an Aerospace Engineer with MS in Aerospace CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). I have an experience of 3 years working with Government and private organizations. I have studied Turbomachinery, Aero Vehicle Design and Computational Fluid Dynamics as my core in MS program and have successfully completed several projects related to CFD and turbomachinery. Few examples are "Design and analysis of centrifugal Compressor and high pressure turbine for a turbofan engine", "Analysis first stage of turbine exposed to UHTs", "Design and analysis of fan Compressor" and several other projects. All these projects are done in ANSYS with ICEM CFD as the meshing tool while Fluent as the solver. I have also formulated generic MATLAB and FORTRAN codes for AVD of different aircrafts and conduction, convection, diffusion, advection and convection-diffusion problems which involve solving heat transfer problems by incorporating efficient numerical techniques. I have also been working on ANSYS Fluent and CFX for past three years and have good experience working with the simulations of turbomachinery. All the projects are in my portfolio. Hello, I will cut to the chase, I haven't made a wind catcher before nor do I yet understand its objective aside from you describing it as a chimney and a natural ventilation system. how ever I have a very solid background of thermal fluids (fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer .. ), and I am an expert Designer and have good experience with ansys fluent and cfx. you seem to understand very well what you want probably you are an engineer yourself, so if you find my qualifications suitable then contact me and we will work it out. Hi Greetings! I am a Mechanical with expertise in CFD. I can use both SolidWorks and ANSYS Fluent for CFD. I have done projects that include CFD of vertical axis wind turbine to optimize TSR, CFD of jet engine compressor for recovery of wake region, Design of wing to optimize lift, etc. Given my experience of CFD projects, I believe I am the right person for this project. Hello, thank you for good description of the project. About 3d model of your wind catcher, is it shell body or this is solid body? Because, Ansys fluent or solidworks flow simulation can work with solid bodys. And by the way please take a look my portfolio with CFD simulation. First scenario this is natural convection simulation. Second scenario this also include natural convection and velocity of wind outside is change. Third scenario it will possible to do just after second scenario. And Yes I can show flow path like a lines with arrows and something like this. Just take a look my portfolio related to CFD. I have a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics. I can simulate different scenarios of wind catcher system using OpenFOAM and do the analysis of the results in Paraview and Blender. Will provide you pertinent snapshots and animations. I can use RANS or Hybrid RANS-LES methods for simulation. Although for these simulations at scale of meters, any method beyond RANS will be overkill and computationally expensive because of excessive grid requirements. For condition 1, the preliminary volume flow rate can be estimated by induced flow formulation and it comes out to be 2.44 m3/s for 1.6m2 area if the inside temperature is 25 C or 77 F. For 3.2 m2 area, the volume flow rate will be double = 4.87 m3/s assuming ideal conditions. There is likely furniture/fans in the building so simulation will provide accurate answers. For conditions 2 and 3, more geometry specifications are needed and simulations will have to be done. But avoid the openings near the corners inside the building. This is likely going to create re-circulation zones (stagnation pockets). Thanks, Nishan

yes RANS is quite ok for such simulations, LES or DNS doesnt make an added value for such case, can be done in pretty short time. I was working on several HVAC projects like that. Can help

Hi, I have gone through your problem description and got the basic understanding of what you want. I'm confident I'll be able to complete this task by exceeding your expectations. I'm currently working as CFD Engineer where I'm simulating ventilation inside a room with air purifier kept inside the room. This will be similar kind of work. About the methodology to solve this project 1. I'll use ANSYS Fluent with 3D steady RANS approach as its sufficient to give required results with minimum computational time and cost. 2. For case 1, to consider the effect of height of the windcatcher, appropriate pressure condition will be given after calculating pressure at the height of 9 m. Without the wind and assigning temperature difference 8 degree Celsius we can do this flow analysis. Effect of size of opening can be determined after analysis (it will increase mass flow rate through the opening) 3. For 2nd condition, velocity inlet will be given to see effect of velocity (2-8 m/s). We can see the air exchange rates for different velocities. 4. 3rd condition can be simulated in same manner as 2nd but with openings on specified direction. 5. I'll provide all required simulation files as well as visuals (images and videos) as per requirement. I'll also help consultation of results.
